Raising the Kursk

Raising the Kursk English American Edition

On August 12, 2000, the Russian nuclear submarine Kursk sank after several explosions in the bow compartment. In this gruesome scenario, 118 crew members were trapped more than 100 meters below the sea surface. It became clear after several days that this terrible accident caused the loss of all lives on board. The loss of the Kursk with 24 ballistic missiles, two nuclear reactors and an unknown number of torpedoes became a national symbol of sorrow and mourning for Russia. President Putin personally promised the people of Russia that the Kursk would be brought to the surface in one year

“Raising the Kursk” tells the true story of this extremely complex operation. The personal experiences of two Dutch brothers who negotiated for the salvage of the century. The intense struggle of the salvagers on board the lifting pontoon. The tireless divers who worked day and night in a race against the clock. And, last but not least, the Russian engineers. They not only designed and built the Kursk but also received the assignment from the Russian Government to salvage her many years later.
The book also gives technical information about the revolutionary raising methods unique to the maritime world. In the text are direct footnote references to the accompanying DVD so the reader can look, listen and be personally touched by the experiences of those directly involved. Furthermore the DVD includes a captivating documentary with unique images at the Barentsz Sea and a computer animation of the raising.
